IT’S FULL OF EXCITEMENTS...
“After my post graduation in structural engineering, I thought of joining a firm where I will get to know how all those theoretical things I have learnt for years is implemented practically. I have joined this company as junior structural engineer and I had many questions in my mind like how will I do it? What am I supposed to do? The first work I got was to design a retaining wall; I started searching google, text books and code books used to go to my senior’s cabin with a bundle of doubts. I always wondered about behaviour of materials under different loading and had much pretty confusions. I should be thankful to my senior staff for her patience in clearly my all silly doubts and giving me more confidence in designing. She usually makes us to think on a topic because analyzing a structure is more important.
My very first project was a steel structure and I was much more excited because I always loved to do the steel structures than the RC buildings. Though it was a very challenging work, my interest to design overcomes everything. Undoubtedly building codes and softwares made things much easier. About designing, the more you learn, the more you will get the interest into it.
Designing a steel structure was a challenge for me because it consists of lots of connections and calculations. Drawing the section plan of the ramp with different options for many times actually made me to think different possibilities. As per the design we decided to provide a rubble retaining wall as it is economic, due to the delay of getting the materials we have changed our plan and decided to go for concrete retaining wall for a small portion. The changing of retaining wall was a quick decision. Constructing a structure on a very loose soil was another challenge, but we overcome everything by the proper guidance of the construction management team
. There were many things to learn for every project. The most satisfied moment was supervising the steel structure construction that I was also a part of the design; it’s really a sense of achievement. Meeting different clients and visiting sites increased my confidence level in design field.
First step to design is to analyze a structure, making more options on our ideas and finally selecting the best one. It’s a rush to touch something that we designed, knowing that our skills were instrumental in bringing it into being. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the ideas, and building excellence on the pivotal role of the company. It’s our profession’s responsibility to shape the future and to turn all the challenges to opportunities.
I am being moulded into a structural engineer by a modicum of questions to improve my analysis skill. Every day, I learn lots of things on structural engineering.
Our chairman - Sunil Sir - always carries a smile with him that turns the office into a positive and peaceful environment. Time management as it is an important factor in our office because hard work pays always. This company gave me world of experiences and excitements in a very short time”.
